Recently in the sleepy town of Bourge, France the locals were bemused by the sudden appearance of a big bumpy foot hazard (or a playful urban art installation as the artist who created would prefer it to be perceived).
From a distance the bump looks just like a speed bump but once pedestrians step on it the structure gives way and ripples and sways.
Created by embedding a water filled cushion under the street cobbles with the aim to break up usual hard texture of the urban setting and provide a fun way for the people to interact with the urban architecture.
This got us thinking… could it work indoors? What regular interior floor covering would work with this – ceramic tiles, wood flooring, whisky barrel cobbles and what kind of interior space would be best suited for this lovely playful installation?
Copenhagen design studio SnedkerStudio have repurposed a traditional marbling technique which ‘engages in a dialogue with the natural growth rings of the wood‘. We’d love to be involved in a project using this unusual flooring idea – please get in touch for an installation quote for this one-off design.
Since February 2009, McKay Flooring have been helping fund international small businesses and individuals through microfinance loans via Kiva in our small bid to help alleviate poverty. Since that date we have made 42 loans to people in Ghana, Afghanistan, Costa Rica, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Bolivia, Cambodia, Mali, Burundi, Nicargua, Iraq, Uganda, Liberia, Senegal and Palestine (and beyond). Over the next few weeks we’ll highlight the stories of the people and groups we’ve helped to encourage others to set up their own Kiva account. You can help by donating as little as $25 to a loan fund. In this our 40th year we will increase our fund amount and will also look be looking at how our business and the flooring industry as a whole can help tackle world poverty.

We absolutely love new innovations in flooring. Creative Japanese architects 403architecture utilised the existing floor void in this apartment in Hamamatsu to create a huge chest of drawers. We’re currently working on some of our own designs for underfloor storage solutions so interested to see another’s take on this growing trend.
